Murals, the most ancient art form, are often our only record of ancient civilizations.
The trompe l'oeil, a special form of mural technique was invented by the Romans
and perfected by the understanding and application of perspective during the Renaissance.

Ryder's style, primarily characterized as realistic impressionism, is intent on
capturing nature’s infinite dance of color and light. His perceptive eye for
architectural detail is particularly evident in his trompe l'oeils.

The trompe l'oeil is a special kind of mural requiring a need for understanding
and applying perspective in such a way as to “trick the eye”. Done properly,
the trompe l'oeil creates the illusion that the scene is not only three dimensional,
but actually contiguous with the surrounding architecture.
